チャイコフスキー*(1840 in Votkinsk in the Russian Empire~1893)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (/ˈpjɔːtər iːˈljiːtʃ tʃaɪˈkɒfski/; Russian: Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский; 1840~1893), was a Russian composer whose works included symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music, and a choral setting of the Russian Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Some of these are among the most popular theatrical music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, which he bolstered with appearances as a guest conductor later in his career in Europe and the United States. One of these appearances was at the inaugural concert of Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1891.  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in Vyatka Governorate in the Russian Empire. The first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 was an event designed to demonstrate Soviet cultural superiority during the Cold War, on the heels of that country's technological victory with the Sputnik launch in October 1957.

cliburnCliburn's performance at the competition finale of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3 on April 13 earned him a standing ovation lasting 8 minutes.

cliburnWhen it was time to announce a winner, the judges were obliged to ask permission of the Soviet leader Khrushchev*to give first prize to an American. "Is he the best?" Khrushchev asked. "Then give him the prize!"

cliburnCliburn returned home to a ticker-tape parade in New York City, the only time the honor has been accorded a classical musician.
Upon returning to the United States, Cliburn appeared in a Carnegie Hall concert with the Symphony of the Air, conducted by Kondrashin, who had led the Moscow Philharmonic in the prize-winning performances in Moscow. The performance of the Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto at this concert was subsequently released by RCA Victor on LP.

cliburnRCA Victor signed him to an exclusive contract, and his subsequent recording of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 became the first classical album to go platinum. It was the best-selling classical album in the world for more than a decade.

*ラフマニノフ(Sergei Rachmaninoff [sʲɪrˈɡʲej rɐxˈmanʲɪnəf]; 1873~1943)is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and a composer. Born near Great Novgorod in north-western Russia. The family is Russian and distant Moldovan descent. Moldova currently divided among Romania (47.5%), Moldova (30.5%) and Ukraine (22%). Moldovans are the largest population group of Republic of Moldova (75.8% of the population), and a significant minority in Ukraine, and Russia.
He is one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music, as a composer. Early influences of Tchaikovsky*, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and his use of rich orchestral colors. The piano is featured prominently, and through his own skills as a performer he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

*ショスタコービッチ(Dmitri Shostakovich [ˈdmʲitrʲɪj ˈdmʲitrʲɪɪvʲɪt͡ɕ ʂəstɐˈkovʲɪt͡ɕ]; 1906~1975)a Russian composer and pianist and a prominent figure of 20th-century music. Born in Saint Petersburg, his paternal grandfather was of Polish Roman Catholic descent (his family roots trace to the region of today's Belarus*).
Shostakovich's works include 15 symphonies and six concerto,15 string quartets, a piano quintet, 2 piano trios, and 2 string octet, 2 solo sonatas and a set of 24 preludes and fugues. Other works include 3 operas, several song cycles, ballets, and a substantial quantity of film music.
After a period influenced by Prokofiev and Stravinsky, Shostakovich developed a hybrid style, including the neo-classical style (showing the influence of Stravinsky) and post-Romanticism (after Gustav Mahler). Sharp contrasts and elements of the grotesque characterize much of his music.
Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Soviet chief of staff, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the government.

Khrushchev arrived in Washington, DC on his first visit to the United States on September 15, 1959. Khrushchev brought his wife, and adult children with him, though it was not usual for Soviet officials to travel with their families. The peripatetic premier visited New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco (visiting a supermarket), Iowa (visiting a farm), Pittsburgh, and Washington, concluding with a meeting with U.S. President Eisenhower at Camp David. Khrushchev was supposed to visit Disneyland, but the visit was canceled for security reasons, much to his disgruntlement.  While visiting an IBM in California, Khrushchev expressed little interest in the computers, but greatly admired the self-service cafeteria, and, on his return, introduced self-service in the Soviet Union.
